About Us
Rev. Keyon S. Payton, D.Min.
The Institute of Trauma and Economic Justice is the vision manifested by Dr. Keyon S. Payton after more than 2 decades of public service, human and civil rights activism, and pastoral leadership. Inspired by fellow Morehouse College alumnus and his childhood hero- the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.- the Institute intertwines environmental, economic, and social justice with civic and ecumenical faith in action.
Dr. Keyon Payton is a distinguished leader with profound expertise in trauma-informed care. As a master trainer in Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and a contracted facilitator with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Substance Use Division, Dr. Payton has dedicated his career to advancing community health and well-being. His leadership extends to his role as a member of the Michigan Prevention and Wellness Advisory Board and as the lead pastor of New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Pontiac, Michigan. In 2023, Dr. Payton completed his doctoral dissertation titled "A Narrative Case Study of ACEs: Trauma-Informed Ministry for New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church and Pontiac, Michigan." This work underscores the essential role of trauma-informed practices within faith-based communities, particularly in addressing the needs of those impacted by childhood trauma.
As the Founder and CEO of the Institute of Trauma and Economic Justice, Dr. Payton is spearheading the development of evidence-based programs at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. These programs are designed to serve as models for other historically Black churches, promoting healing and resilience in marginalized communities.
Understanding the unique challenges faced by these communities, Dr. Payton is launching dedicated ministries within New Bethel to provide a safe and inclusive space for mental health interventions. These ministries aim to foster healing and reconciliation for all individuals and families seeking support. As the National Social Justice Commission Chairman for the National Baptist Convention of America, Dr. Payton is committed to replicating this ministry model across other churches within the Convention. By leveraging his position and the resources of ITEJ, he is training churches on effective mental health interventions, reinforcing his commitment to social justice and addressing the mental health needs of historically marginalized communities.
Beyond his work in the church, Dr. Payton serves on several nationally recognized boards that address issues of health and justice, further demonstrating his dedication to creating a more equitable society.
